Photo of whale otolith fossil

Otoliths, inner ear bones, seem to be far more common than other complete bones. Plenty of vertebrae are found, and other bones, of course, but in the right localities these ear bones do appear in large numbers. Perhaps they are of denser bone and are more frequently fossilised. These are between 15 and 20 million years old and from South Carolina. They are mostly from whales of the sperm whale group.
