From Russia with love
On February the 15th this year the tv news and internet was awash with footage of a meteorite landing in the Southern Urals of Russia. A dramatic fireball crossing the sky, windows shattering, car alarms going off, etc. It was after 9 in the morning in that part of Russia, so plenty people were up and about, and ready to film the event on their phones and cameras. It was pretty spectacular, and you can see a montage of footage by clicking here.
There was a scramble to collect the fallen material, and a little turned up at the trade shows in France and Germany earlier this year. There was a bit more to be had in Denver earlier this month and I managed to get a few pieces. The wholesale price rose quite dramatically, and it seems it will be very difficult (and even more expensive) to get any more. The Russian government has collected the bulk of it, and the proximity of the fall to civilisation ensured a swift and fairly thorough clean up. I'll put a picture of a few of the pieces on the shop's Facebook page later.
