Burnt on the outside, raw in the middle
Remains of a one million year old fire have been found in a cave in South Africa. This makes it the oldest deliberate cooking fire found to date. Found among the ashes were pieces of bone - it's not clear which animal had been cooked, but it was probably Homo erectus doing the cooking. Given the bones had been heated to around 500 degrees, it seems erectus preferred their meat well done.
