Rainbow velvet obsidian

Rainbow obsidian displays a play of colour - purples, blues, greens, pinks - caused by refraction of light by the tiny gas bubbles preserved in the rapidly-cooled lava. The velvet variety shows a slightly different texture in the colour. Polishing a piece to best show its colour is an art in itself.
