In one ear - news story

Researchers at Binghampton University in New York have examined the ear bones of two different hominins - Paranthropus robustus and Australopithecus africanus - from around 2 million years ago. They have found evidence to support the suggestion language wasn't developed by that time. The bones show a mixture of ape-like and human-like characteristics which they believe would not provide the necessary mid-register sensitivity to allow complex communication by speech.

Wings under Wyoming - news story

The Green River Formation of Wyoming is famous for its fish fossils. It was a series of lakes in the Eocene and its limestones throw up fish by the trailerload, but now and again fossil hunters turn up something more unusual. Rays, turtles, bats and even a three-toed horse have been found, as well as a few species of bird.
Now a bird has been found that looks to be an ancestor of swifts and hummingbirds. .......

More, more, more - news story

After a couple of delays, all the things I bought at the Tucson show in January and February are finally here. A big chunk of yesterday was spent getting the crates moved from the back of the truck to the pavement outside the shop, unloading the crates to the shop floor, moving the piiles of boxes and wrapped fish to the basement pallets, folding up the crates, moving the crates to the basement and having .......

Rock idol - news story

Many museums have a store of material that has been carefully collected, gently wrapped, then set aside for preparation and study. Sometimes there can be a very long time between a couple of those stages.
One Canadian museum has made a feature of this, bringing five wrapped dinosaur specimens back into the light and asking visitors to vote for which they'd most like to see prepared and displayed. The candidates were named, and shown alongside collection .......

Head count - news story

A couple of days ago on the Facebook page, I linked to a story about how there are possibly a great many dinosaurs mistakenly assigned as new species. This has always been a problem - if a specimen looks a little different, the temptation is to name it a new species. It makes for a better story, you get to name it, etc, etc. But there's a good chance it may just have been a .......

Cleaning meteorites - sort of news story

If you have an iron metoerite, it's a good idea to show it a bit of attention from time to time. Iron is iron, and even the more stable meteorites can show a little rust over time. Yesterday I spent a while scrubbing and oiling some of my Sikhote-Alin material.
I have an old nail brush for times like this - it's pretty good for getting rid of the loose, oxidised flakes on the surface of .......

Happy Birthday, Mr Darwin - news story

Today - February 12th - is Charles Darwin's birthday. You've probably heard of him. There's a movement to hold an international Darwin Day on this date, as a celebration of all things scientific. Not a bad idea. You can read more about it by clicking here.....

Go West - news story

Next Friday I'm off to the big trade fair in Arizona. If there's something you'd like me to look for whilst there, please let me know. I will be back in te shop on the 11th of February, though the stock won't get back here until much later - probably around the end of March.
I'm still making the list of what I need to get, and will hopefully have enough left over to get a .......

More stuff - news story

I have a supplier visiting today, bringing yet more stuff for me to cram into the basement. There will be more Dactylioceras nodules from Yorkshire, some excellent Moroccan trilobites, insects from Wyoming, Seymchan meteorite sections from Russia and a crinoid from Indiana.
For the first time in a while, I'm getting some Scutella sand dollars from France, too. Looking forward to those - the price got too high as supply dried up a few years ago, .......
