Pleuroceras

Wonderful pyritised ammonites from near Nuremburg in Germany. These Pleuroceras spinosum aren't found like this, and there's a bit of enhancement involved - they're covered in a white, powdery layer when found. A scrub with a brass wire brush removes the powdery layer and gives a golden sheen to the pyrite that has replaced the organic material of the ammonite during the fossilisation process. They are around 160 million years old.
